‘ArtJam’ Enjoyments
By Sanib-Sining Movement
ENJOY! This has been the “Prime Directive” given to all who come to a session of the “Synaesthetix Art Jam” since the Sanib-Sining Movement was born at the very start of this century five years ago. What to enjoy? Let’s see… For starters, you are welcome to draw with pencils, and draw pencils! Sing with happy voices together, about happy voices together! Unwind! Relax your mind!
Want more? Let art flow from your heart! Copy with watercolor a green cup of coffee; but be careful where you dip your brush — green coffee tastes funny! Can’t control a brush? Paint with your finger. Don’t lick it, though -- colorful tongue will not make for colorful speech! Beat the drum, paced by your heartbeat! Create simple symbols for great realities, dance out the flame within! Let your words sing in poems! Act out your part in life! Let’s all enjoy doing this together!
Sanib-Sining is a program within the Human Development and Harmony (HDH) Program Thrust of SanibLakas Foundation. It seeks the development of a strong movement for “synaesthetics.” This is the promotion of a synergism-oriented view that aesthetics as a basic faculty belongs to all humans, a view of art that is embracive, not competitive, and a view of artists as all humans belonging to only two categories -- those who know that they are artists and those who don't -- with those of the former category being challenged to help those of the latter to "discover, develop and share" their artistic talents.
We are going to reach and convince organizations of practicing artists to adopt the “Credo of Synaesthetics” and take up this challenge as seriously as they can, while enjoying the whole effort.
Credo-based Movement
The movement for this school of art ethics was formed in 1999, spearheaded by the Sanibkulay Group, a SanibLakas-inspired visual arts group then giving "easy art lessons" at very affordable rates at the “alternative place” in Quezon City called Earthlite.
Upon the belief that art is a community affair, Sanib-Sining started organizing art-jamming sessions (like the monthly "Sanib-Tinig" sing-out jamming for free expression and happy togetherness held at EarthLite (until 2003) where there were no walls setting distinct performers apart from all others who come together for these, nor high walls separating the various forms of art. A theme song was composed for these jammings, titled “Happy Voices Together” (see page 8).
ArtJam Sessions, Process
Sanib-Sining will organize regular ArtJam sessions in specific venues with specific schedules, each of which sessions will combine at least three activities, namely, Sanib-Tinig community singing, Sanib-Pinta joint painting, and Sanib-Tulaan group poetry-writing.
It will also promote a unified process that weaves together all these ArtJam sessions with similar formal and informal art-jammming events (that would combine at least two forms of art enjoyed simultaneously), all embraced by the spirit of the Credo and joint enjoyment of all participants everywhere.
Monthly ArtJam sessions have been scheduled for the last Tuesday of each month (6-9 pm) at the Conspiracy Garden Bar along Visayas Ave. in Quezon City, and parallel activities will be encouraged to start being held regularly in other cities and town centers of the country.
